The United States needs teachers β badly. The National Education Association estimates a shortage of more than 300,000 teachers across the country, with some states reporting crisis-level vacancies in Special Education, Mathematics, Science, and bilingual instruction. Filipino teachers are among the most sought-after international candidates because of strong English proficiency, solid pedagogical training, and a deep commitment to the profession.
But finding a job from the Philippines isn't the same as finding one locally. Here's the complete roadmap.
Before You Apply: What You Need Ready
Have These Before You Start Applying
- π NACES credential evaluation (WES or ECE, course-by-course) β most districts require this
- π State teacher certification or proof that your application is in progress
- π US-format resume β no photo, no civil status, accomplishment-driven bullet points
- βοΈ Cover letter tailored to the specific district
- π§βπ« 3 professional references with phone and email (principals preferred)
- π Visa pathway clarity β know whether you need J-1, H-1B, or have another status
Job Boards That Actually Work
Not all job boards are equal. These are the ones where US districts actively post teaching vacancies and where international applications are welcomed:
1. Teach.org / USAJobs-style State Portals
Each US state runs its own teacher job portal. Texas uses EDJOIN and the TEA Job Board. Florida uses the Florida Department of Education School Directory. California uses EdJoin.org. For states actively recruiting internationally, go directly to the state DOE jobs page and search "international" or "J-1 sponsorship."
2. Frontline Education (formerly AppliTrack)
Used by thousands of US school districts. Create a free account at frontlineeducation.com and apply to multiple districts using a single profile. Many districts in Texas, Florida, Nevada, and Maryland use Frontline.
3. Indeed β Education Filter
Search "teacher" + your subject + state on Indeed. Filter by "visa sponsorship" to narrow to districts open to international applicants. Indeed aggregates listings from district websites and third-party recruiters.
4. SchoolSpring
SchoolSpring.com focuses exclusively on K-12 education jobs. Strong coverage of New England states (Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island) and some Mid-Atlantic districts.

We curate US and New Zealand teaching vacancies with visa sponsorship information, salary ranges, and direct application links β updated regularly.
Recruitment Agencies That Sponsor Filipino Teachers
Going through a licensed US recruitment agency is the most common pathway for Filipino teachers. These agencies partner directly with school districts and handle visa sponsorship. They do not charge you a placement fee β the district pays.
Participate Learning
One of the largest J-1 teacher sponsors. Places Filipino teachers primarily in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Texas. Strong support program.

Major exchange visitor sponsors. Place teachers across multiple states. Application process is competitive but thorough support is provided.
J-1 Sponsor Β· intraxinc.comGreenheart Exchange
Places international teachers on J-1 visas in high-need US schools. Works across multiple states. Good orientation program for new arrivals.
J-1 Sponsor Β· greenheart.orgTeachers2Teachers International

Direct Placementβ οΈ Watch Out for Illegal Recruitment Fees
Under Philippine law (RA 8042 / Migrant Workers Act), licensed agencies cannot charge placement fees to overseas Filipino workers in education. If an agency asks you to pay a recruitment fee to the Philippines-based partner, report them to POEA. Legitimate US-based sponsors are paid by the school district, not by you.
Direct District Applications
You don't always need an agency. Many US school districts accept direct applications from international teachers β especially in high-shortage states like Texas, Nevada, and Maryland. Here's how to apply directly:
Identify target districts
Choose 5β10 districts in your target state that are known to hire internationally. Houston ISD, Clark County (Las Vegas), Prince George's County (Maryland), and Miami-Dade are among the most international-teacher-friendly in the US.
π« Research district HR pages directlyApply through the district's HR portal
Every major district has an online application system. Go to the district website β Careers or Human Resources β Teaching Positions. Upload your US-format resume, cover letter, and credential evaluation report.
π» Most use Frontline or TalentEdEmail the HR recruiter directly
After applying online, find the international teacher recruiter's email (often listed on the HR page) and send a brief, professional email noting your application, your subject/grade level, and that you are a licensed Philippine teacher seeking visa sponsorship.
π§ Don't just apply β follow upGet the USA Application Kit
Includes district contact list for international teacher hiring, cover letter template, credential checklist, and visa sponsorship guide β everything in one PDF.
Realistic Timeline
Filipino teachers often underestimate how long the process takes. Here's a realistic timeline from decision to first day of class:
- Month 1β2: NACES credential evaluation + US resume preparation
- Month 2β4: Active job applications (boards + agencies + direct)
- Month 3β5: Interviews, job offer, and J-1 or H-1B paperwork
- Month 4β6: Visa application + state teacher certification processing
- Month 6β8: Arrival + orientation + first day of class
Total: 6β12 months from start to classroom. Starting earlier gives you more options. The US school year starts in AugustβSeptember, so most districts recruit JanuaryβMay for the following school year.
